Alexander Melnikov North American Tour November 6 - 18, 2011
The Moscow-born pianist Alexander Melnikov will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87—a work rarely played in its entirety—at only two dates on this tour: November 12 at his San Francisco debut and in Middlebury, Vermont November 18. On its release, his Shostakovich cycle recording rose to the top of the critics' lists and was awarded the Choc de classic, the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik and BBC Music Magazine's 2011 Instrumental Recording of the Year.
In 2012 Melnikov returns to the U.S. with recital partner violinist Isabelle Faust for a short set of dates in Vancouver and San Francisco. Their complete recording of the Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano won both Germany’s ECHO Klassik prize and a Gramophone Award and has become a reference recording of this repertoire. Melnikov’s highly anticipated recording of Shostakovich’s Piano Concertos with Isabelle Faust and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra will be released in February 2012.
